<p>Geo-environmental factors wield substantial influence in both the design and construction of transportation infrastructure.Managing the financial risk associated with geo-environmental factors is key to the successful implementation of transportation infrastructure projects. Ground Investigations are the primary avenue to minimize financial risk due to geo-environmental factors. Limiting ground investigations to desk studies and preliminary reconnaissance based on superficial site inspection, or carrying out reactive post-contract ground investigations, however, appears to be a pervasive culture of construction projects. A conceptual framework of financial risks triggered as a consequence of inadequate geo-environmental risk management is developed, to synthesize the literature findings. The study further outlines a qualitative methodology to investigate cost overruns caused by geo-environmental factors, due to the inadequacy of ground investigations carried out by highway agencies on highway projects executed in the Niger Delta. The study outcome corroborates the consistent referrals to the inadequacy of ground investigations carried out on Niger Delta’s highway projects, which serves to trigger cost overruns. The study provides a foundation for further investigation and recommendations to improve the technical and financial management of highway infrastructure projects in the Niger Delta region.</p>Amadi AloloteIbim

<p>Our study addresses the challenging issue of traffic congestion in modern urban areas and the limitations of traditional solutions like road expansion and network indicators. To effectively tackle traffic congestion, the study explores various strategies that analyze traffic elements, falling into the Macroscopic and Microscopic Models. However, conventional traffic modeling faces significant challenges in dealing with complex traffic systems.</p><p>Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, including fuzzy logic, evolutionary algorithms, neural networks, and reinforcement learning, emerge as promising solutions for traffic control. For instance, artificial neural networks accurately predict urban traffic flow, and meta-heuristic AI approaches like the artificial bee colony algorithm optimize signal timings.</p><p>The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) offers opportunities for effective traffic analysis by collecting vast and uncertain data. Nevertheless, most existing systems focus on local events, leaving a gap in their effectiveness. To address this, multi-agent systems become a novel strategy, deploying distributed agents across road intersections for comprehensive traffic management.</p><p>The paper proposes applying the ant colony optimization algorithm within a distributed multi-agent architecture, leveraging IoT technology, to address path routing challenges in urban traffic. The study emphasizes the potential of advanced AI techniques and multi-agent systems in revolutionizing traffic management for efficient and sustainable urban transportation systems.</p>Majid MahdiS. 2023-12-292023-12-2910318Influence of Constant Micro Strain Levels on the Strength Properties of the Asphalt Concrete mixture

<p><em>Asphalt concrete mixture is designed to resist the deformation and vehicular traffic loading throughout its service life. However, when the asphalt concrete pavement practices over loading within the service life period, it exhibits cracking and rutting. In the present investigation, an attempt has been taken to understand the strength performance of asphalt concrete when practicing variable levels of constant stresses. Asphalt concrete mixture was prepared at optimum asphalt cement requirement and compacted in a slab mold </em><em>of (60 x 300 x 400) mm and subjected to roller compaction to the target bulk density. </em><em>Beam specimens of 63 mm width, 50 mm depth, and 400 mm length were obtained from the compacted slab sample using the Diamond-saw. The beam specimens were tested for fatigue life under constant strain levels of 250, 400, and 750 with the aid of the four-points repeated flexural bending beam test to verify the influence of constant strain levels on the permanent deformation, fatigue life, flexural stiffness, and its resistance to flexural stresses. Test was conducted under 20 °C environment. It was concluded that the permanent deformation increases by (11, and 29) folds as the constant strain level raised from 250 to 400 and 750 respectively. The fatigue life declines by (95 and 99.1) percentage when the constant strain level increases from 250 to 400 and 750 respectively. The flexural stiffness declines by (16.6 and 20.8) percentage when the constant strain level increases from 250 to 400 and 750 respectively.</em></p>saad sarsam

This work aims to analyze the emission of CO2 in the operation of metro rail passenger transportation systems powered by electricity, confronting it with the emission of other means of transportation which would be used if that system was not available. We propose a methodology to quantify the reduction of CO2 emissions which is provided by the metro rail systems and its application, in a conservative manner, to Rio de Janeiro Metro. The results highlight the importance of the energy matrix used in the generation of electricity, of the fuels used and the quantity of passengers; they also show that in 2011 and 2012 the operation of Rio de Janeiro Metro avoided the emission of 5 times more CO2 than the actual amount emitted, therefore contributing for the reduction of CO2 emissions in the transportation system of the city of Rio de Janeiro.Carlos Eduardo Sanches de Andrade

Simultaneously, the substantial production of fly ash and pond ash from thermal plants has led to environmental pollution. To address these pressing issues, the effective utilization of fly ash through partial cement replacement in high-strength concrete has emerged as a viable solution. Experimental investigations have demonstrated the feasibility of this approach, offering a means to alleviate cement scarcity and reduce overall construction costs.
