Brushless DC Motor Drive System with Reduced DC-Link Capacitor for Reduction in Torque Ripple

Abstract


Presence of large value of dc-link capacitance in a brushless DC motor (BLDCM) drive system leads to an increase in the weight and volume of the system. A combination of an IGBT switch along with a small value of DC-link capacitance is proposed in this paper. BLDCM will be supplied by DC-link capacitor and rectified mains supply alternately via DC-link IGBT chopping during the time when the output voltage of diode rectifier cannot satisfy the voltage required for normal operation of BLDCM. This is needed in order to keep the phase currents continuous and stable. Such an arrangement makes best use of energy from rectified mains supply, so the energy provided by capacitor can be reduced, and hence, the required capacitance can be decreased accordingly. Simulation of the suggested system is carried out using Matlab/Simulink software. Results obtained are comparable to that of Changliang et al., but with less computational effort.
