A New Approach to the Laplace-Domain Transient Analysis of Non-Uniform Lines with Application to Power Line Towers

Mohamed Mostafa Saied

Abstract

Abstract:

This paper presents a new technique for the Laplace-domain analysis ofthe electromagnetic transients in non-uniform lines with special consideration of high voltage power line towers. The derived partial differential equations governing the voltage and current distributions, as functions of both the location and time, are solved by an efficient Mathematica computercode based on parametric functions. The applicability of the proposed direct distributed-parameter simulation is demonstrated. Theresults are in good agreement with those obtained through the application of other more sophisticated solution methods available in the literature. Several case studies are investigated in order to indicate the impact of the different affecting parameters such as the towers’ footing termination and the time waveform of the lightning strike.
