Fuzzy Control for Speed Control of DC Motor with Two-inductor Boost Converter

G. Kishor, R. Ramprasad

Abstract

This study presents a closed loop control of two-inductor boost converter fed DC motor with the design of fuzzy controller to control the speed of separately excited DC motor. The speed of motor can be changed by controlling the armature and field voltages. The fuzzy controller is designed to control the armature voltage while the field voltage is fixed as a constant. The fuzzy controller system tunes to error and change of error of the speed control system so that the motor speed is changed accordingly to the step response specifications. The duty ratio of the converter is adjusted according to the set reference speed with the tuning of the fuzzy controller. The proposed system is designed and verified by digital computer simulation. The results show that the step responses of the speed of the DC motor controlled by the fuzzy controller have step responses with small overshoot when compared to the conventional PI controller. The proposed controller shows the effectiveness of the speed control of the DC motor with zero steady state error when the reference is set to 1700 rpm.
