Abstract

Chemical industry is a boon for recent advancement in various fields of engineering, especially civil engineering. Chemicals are playing vital role in construction field focusing. Construction is a complex combination of physical and chemical actions. Physical aspect takes care of aesthetics and exterior appearance while chemical aspect deals with life and performance of the constructed structure. Accordingly, chemistry cannot be separated from any construction activity. Concrete is one of those materials which involve complex chemical reactions right from the time of mixing cement with water and aggregates to form a homogeneous matrix of concrete. Construction activity has been in existence since millions of years. It has been continuously improvised with need of the time. This improvisation gave rise to the external supplement for concrete matrix to provide those additional properties or characteristics as demanded by the client. These chemicals were required to be created with harmless side effects and effective performance to improvise concrete to suit to the final requirement as desired. This study discusses need of construction chemicals for better concrete than it was existing “yesterday”.
