An Analysis of Electric Vehicle Battery Safety Tests for Enhanced Customer Acceptability: An Indian Perspective

Electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers while introducing EVs in the market, must ensure that their final product must be in compliance with the safety standards assigned by the regulatory bodies. EV battery is one of the components that needs more attention towards its safety design, as it acts as a major source of hazard. New testing regulations for EV battery safety were rolled out by government of India. The objective behind bringing these safety regulations is to ensure the human and vehicle safety of battery-operated vehicles. The main focus of these regulations is on having better quality of cell, pack and Battery Management System (BMS). EV and battery suppliers have to mandatory follow these regulations for having a claim on government schemes i.e Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles (FAME) II Production Linked Incentive (PLI) and Advanced Cell Chemistry (ACC). In the present work an analysis of battery regulations that ensures quality under these three headings is made. Their need, testing equipment / conditions required for making battery standard compliance, procedure of testing of each parameter coming under these three categories were examined. The same are evaluated considering ease of adoption by the manufactures. Based on analysis made, findings and conclusion provided for better coordination between testing agency and manufactures.
