Catalyst: From Lab to Industry

Shikha Suman

Abstract

To know about the catalyst industry, first we have to understand what is the catalyst and how it is used, we are very familiar with the reactions in lab but the journey of the catalyst from lab to the industry plants are quite interesting, first of all what is catalyst then. Catalysts are substances that speed up reactions by providing an alternative pathway for the breaking and making of bonds. The main function of the catalyst is key to this alternative pathway and lower activation energy than that required for the uncatalysed reaction. Thus after the nature of the catalyst then we can say that, Catalysts are often specific for one particular reaction and this is particularly so for enzymes which catalyse biological reactions, for example in the fermentation of carbohydrates to produce biofuels.
