Critical Termination Reasons Influencing High-Way Projects in Nigeria

Abstract

Viable road network is one of the major infrastructural yardsticks for assessing economic development of a country. It is complex and characterized with different elements which influence its operational efficiency. The project clients desired quality service within contractual cost and time, but usually these objectives are not met. The objective of this paper is to determine most critical reasons for terminating high-way projects in Nigeria with data obtained from 60 road construction projects through an 82 items questionnaire survey. The project site conditions, technical incompetency of the contractor, design problems, faulty contract estimate, budgetary inadequacies, resource material inadequacies and excess claims were identified and examined as critical reasons for termination using mean, standard deviation and factor analysis. Findings of the study indicated that project site conditions, technical incompetency of the contractor, design problems and faulty contract estimate were most critical reasons for the termination of road project through factor analysis using principal component analysis. Stakeholders in the construction industry might find this study outcome useful as it has provided further justification on salient reasons for high-project termination.
