CONSTRUCTION SAFETY ANALYSIS OF INDIA: EXPLORING THE FEASIBILITY OF IMPLEMENTING INTERNET OF THINGS AS A PLATFORM TO PROTECT WORKER SAFETY & HEALTH
Abstract
Construction safety has become a major problem in India. Obtaining a proper solution is becoming a contemporary issue. In spite of spending money towards procuring personal protective equipment and incorporating other traditional safety measures, worker safety is not ensured in construction projects. According to an international report and national news and magazine reports, almost 48000 workers are subject to die due to fatal accidents taking place in India in which the construction sector tops with 24.20 percent. The objective of the present study is to conduct a literature review and secondary data analysis based on qualitative research to reveal the traditional safety challenges and issues. The results have confirmed that adopting traditional safety measures and insurance provisions has been becoming less effective in terms of putting construction companies to put more investment and pay huge amounts for the worker's sufferings, disablements, and fatalities based on the Workers' compensation act, of 1923. The IoT (Internet of Things) has drawn significant attention in several industries and hence it has more potential to adapt in the construction industry to promote worker safety. So, in this research sufficient theoretical grounding work has been explored and mentioned on the construction safety and health using relevant theories, methodologies, and approaches such as conducting prototype-based pragmatically feasible wireless sensor and IoT-based microcontroller systems with sensors and corresponding hypothesis declaration is developed.
