Macro-flow Dynamics of Wind over C H and L type Buildings

Hirak Ranjan Das, Sankar Barman, Kalyan Kumar Das

Abstract

Synoptic and downburst winds are most prevalent in the Indian subcontinent. This paper presents the analysis of the dynamics of these two winds around different buildings using numerical simulation. ANSYS CFX 18 code has been used for the simulation. To maintain accuracy in the results, the grid independence test has been considered. Three commonly used building types C, H and L have been considered for the study. For each type of building, the influences of the winds have been analyzed in terms of the velocity field, streamline velocity vector, vorticity spectrum and pressure distribution coefficient on the building surfaces. The study shows that the wind flow dynamics are more complex for L type building compared to C and H type buildings. Depending upon the flow dynamics, both positive and negative pressure leading to suction force was found to be developed on the building surfaces. Finally, it is anticipated that this work would help the building designer, real estate, or town planners in developing resilient building structures from the wind load point of view.
