Safety Index for Small Scale Manufacturing Industries in Punjab

Abstract


Safety index (SI) is a significant approach, utilized to monitor safety measures, ranking a problem and also helps in the decision-making process. In this paper, a new safety index has been developed for occupational safety of workers for small scale manufacturing industries (SSMI) of Punjab using well-known Delphi method and value of index is found to be 10.95. To check the validity of the factors, content validity index (CVI) is used, by taking experts’ opinions. SI is also evaluated by analysis of data collected from 15 SSMI of Punjab. From each industry, 11 workers were considered to fill the questionnaire. Average value of SI among 15 industries is found to be 7.41, which indicates that the lesser safety measures are maintained in SSMI of Punjab. Thus, the working environment is found to be dangerous for the workers. The primary reason behind this uncertain environment is the lack of knowledge among the workers. Therefore, it is required to improve the occupational safety factors of SSMI, so that employees should feel safe and comfortable in their respective workplace.
