Environment Degradation and Disaster Management in Gilgit-Baltistan

Arshad Ali, Muhammad Irshad, Shahid Iqbal

Abstract

The mountainous region of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has been impacted by excessive natural and human-induced hazards like landslides, earthquakes, floods, avalanches and rock falls etc. Weak institutions coupled with climate/environmental changes are some of the factors increasing vulnerability of communities living in GB. In this paper, an attempt has been made to highlight the increased vulnerability of GB to various disasters due to phenomenon of climate/environmental change and recommended a methodology for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and conservation of the environment. For this paper, personal experience of employment of author in GB and interaction with NDMA/ERRA authorities/locals of GB have been used. However, main reliance of the paper remains on literature review and browsing of certain websites.
