Musculoskeletal disorder and psychosocial work demands in Insurance industry: A case study

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction- Insurance sector is a group of professionals who perform under time pressure. The use of computer increases in the insurance industry which is linked with musculoskeletal pain. The objective of the study is to analyze the prevalence of MS pain during past 12 months and to correlate it with these work related factors. Methods- Insurance office workers from various companies in Punjab responded to the questionnaire which is related to the work style questions and pain related questions. Correlation analysis was performed to find the association of MS pain with work related risk factors. Results- Out of 92 employees, 68 participated responded to the work style and pain questionnaire. The most dominant pain was in Neck (38.23%), followed by low back (30.88%), wrist/hand (20.5%) and shoulders (13.2%). The effective risk factors identified by the Regression analysis were psychosocial work demands and the duration of computer use per day. Conclusion- Psychosocial work factors shows strongest association for Musculoskeletal pain in insurance employees. The individual response to workload demands and stresses causes mental fatigue which is associated with MSD. Based upon these results; it is recommended that psychosocial work factors should be focussed to reduce musculoskeletal disorders.
