Review of Health and Safety Hazards in Oil and Gas Industry using HIRA Method
Abstract
Oil and gas industry has various types of hazards such as physical, chemical, biological, ergonomical, psychological. From the annual reports, case studies and research papers of previous years were analyzed for knowing the possible hazards during different activities in oil and gas industries. The result indicates change in control systems can develop healthy and safe environment at work place. Risk assessment is required on a daily basis in the oil sector. The goal of assessment is to identify hazards and eliminate risk. To identify hazard we must observe factors like safety (fire, toxic gases, falls, and machine failure) health (water problems, insect or animals bites, bacteria, viruses) and environmental (waste disposal, air pollution, oil spills) by which we can safe the workers from hazards. This paper highlights potential hazards, defining the risk and associated risk with hazard. Control measures –training, supervision by evaluation of hazards.
