Active Fire Protection for a Hospital Building by Fire Suppression and Fire Detection Alarm Systems
Abstract
Fire protection systems are often disregarded, underutilized, and misunderstood despite their critical role in safeguarding lives and property. Although the requirements for these systems have been clearly defined and the widespread benefits of their installation in all types of structures are well recognized, some individuals, including the general public, show little to no interest in fire protection. This lack of interest can be attributed to a lack of awareness regarding the existence and functionality of these systems, or a failure to grasp their significance in ensuring personal safety. Additionally, some design professionals may not find fire protection systems aesthetically pleasing or may lack the necessary knowledge and understanding of their inherent advantages. To combat this issue of misinformation, it is essential to focus on two key approaches: educating and providing information about firefighting systems. Furthermore, it is imperative to address the specific need for incorporating firefighting systems in new hospitals and retrofitting existing buildings with comprehensive firefighting equipment. Although healthcare facilities constitute a relatively small proportion of the overall building stock, they have a disproportionately large impact on public safety and the surrounding environment in the event of a fire. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize the integration of firefighting systems in these structures. This project specifically centers on exploring various types of active fire protection systems and their components, as well as their operational characteristics. The primary objective of designing firefighting systems for buildings should always revolve around ensuring the safety of individuals, protecting valuable property, and maintaining uninterrupted operations or functionality.
