Abstract

While precision is of paramount importance in machining of high strength conductive materials, Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) is preferred. In the present work, experimental study has been carried to identify the appropriate process parameter settings for wire electrical discharge machining of high carbon high chromium D2 steel (HCHCrD2). The process parameters such as pulse peak current, pulse duration, pulse-off time, wire feed, wire tension and flushing pressure are considered. The influence of these process parameters on material removal rate (MRR) and surface finish are studied in this work. In order to give assurance for high MRR, some extent of surface finish has to be compromised. Similarly, MRR will be decreased while the efforts are channelized to enhance surface finish. Therefore, it is essential to select the process parameters to optimize both MRR and surface finish. In this work, response surface methodology based Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) is employed for solving this multi-response optimization problem in WEDM. The study explores the WEDM process parameters settings to achieve better MRR and good surface finish simultaneously.
