Characteristics of Sulphate, Nitrate and Total Dissolved Solid on Packed Bed Treatment of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Water Using Adsorbent

Ukpaka Chukwuemeka Peter, Achadu M. Abah

Abstract

The characteristics of sulphate, nitrate and total dissolved solid was monitored in treatment of water medium contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbon. Agro-based adsorbent was used at different operating temperature in a packed bed unit connected in series of 1, 2 and 3. The initial concentration of sulphate, nitrate and total dissolved solid was measured and after the contaminates had passed through each packed bed unit. The result shows that the adsorbent possesses the potential of adsorbing the sulphate, nitrate and total dissolved solid in the pollutant. An agro-based adsorbent was employed in a packed bed unit connected in series with 1, 2, and 3 at varying operating temperatures. Following the contamination of each packed bed unit, the initial concentrations of sulphate, nitrate, and total dissolved solid were measured. The outcome demonstrates that the adsorbent has the capacity to adsorb the pollutant's sulphate, nitrate, and total dissolved solid. The concentration of the parameters investigated decreases from one stage to other as the output product of each stage become the input product of the next stage. The change in the concentration of sulphate, nitrate and total dissolved solid was influenced by variation in temperature. This research has proof that agro-based material of plantain and banana is a good source for formulation of adsorbent.
