Peroxide Modification of Polyolefins and Long Chain Branching and Molecular Weight Distribution Comparative Studies Thereof using HTGPC

Abstract
The modification of polypropylene by combined use of peroxides and multifunctional components (MFC) is widely carried in order to introduce the long chain branching in the polymer. The presence of long chain branching in the polymer structure have effect on the processability, the melt strength and hence, the end-use of polyolefin polymers. The high temperature gel permeation chromatography (HTGPC) is widely used technique in the estimation of molecular weight, molecular weight distribution (MWD), long chain branching (LCB) and its distribution in the polyolefin polymers. The roles of two different peroxides and two MFCs in introduction of the LCB have been studied in detail. Two different peroxides used were (a) 2,5-Dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butylperoxy) hexane (DHBP) and (b) Luperox 101, and the two MFCs used were PentaErythritol TriAcrylate (PETA-tri) and PentaErythritol TetraAcrylate (PETA-tetra). Results indicate that Luperox 101 and PETA-tri are comparatively more effective in introducing LCB in PP molecule.
