A Review on Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Metal Matrix Composites
Abstract
Abstract
Nowadays, there is a rapid development in advanced metal matrix composites for structural engineering and functional devices. A real change in research from monolithic to composite materials has taken place due to need for low cost, high performance and good quality materials from the past decade. Composite materials consist of two or more materials that may differ in chemical and physical properties and are not soluble in one another. The primary constituent in a composite material is the matrix phase that provides load transfer and structural integrity, while the reinforcement to enhance mechanical properties. Aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMCs) are sought over other conventional materials in the field of aerospace, automotive and marine applications owing to their excellent improved properties. This paper presents a review focused on the mechanical and tribological properties of aluminium metal matrix composites fabricated through stir casting method. The literature review framework in this paper provides a clear overview of the usage of TiC as a reinforcing agent in aluminium matrix material along with its distinctive performances.
