Abstract

Structures are constantly evolving with regard to the safety and usability criteria. The structures are expected to provide safe shelter for the dwellers by providing economy and value at the same time. As we progress further into the twenty-first century, engineers are presented with modern problems that their predecessors were almost none accustomed to. Blast loads on the structures were one of such loads that the engineers in the past were little worried but as the cities develop at a fascinating rate, the hazards of terrorist activity also increased. The geopolitical scenario has changed the way the cities used to be and security has become a big concern. Not just the terrorist activities but the blasts occurring unintendedly or by accidents are also a big threat. In fact, more lives are lost due to unintended blasts than terrorist activities. It is necessary to be prepared for any load on the structure just as we design the structures for seismic activity. The analysis of a structure subjected to blast loads and then a resistant structure is presented in the following study.

Keywords: Blast load, displacement, ETABS, shear, storey drift
