Metal corrosion prevention control with uses of sol-gel coatings

Nisha Pandey

Abstract

The potential for sol-gel generated films to replace methods for pre-treating metal surfaces with chromate is very high. Metallic and organic paint can be painted on with good adherence thanks to inorganic sol-gel generated coatings. Their significant crack-forming propensity prevents them from offering appropriate corrosion protection. A thicker, more flexible, functionalized film is produced with improved compatibility to various organic top coatings when an organic component is added to an inorganic sol-gel system. Due to reduced porosity and cracking potential as well as improved mechanical properties, the incorporation of nanoparticles into hybrid sol-gel systems improves their ability to defend against corrosion. Inorganic nanoparticle inclusion can also be used to provide corrosion inhibitors, creating inhibitor Nano reservoirs for "self-repairing" well before with controlled release qualities. Films made from sol-gel have a great deal of potential as alternatives to the harmful chromate metal-surface pre-treatment techniques. Metal and organic paint attach well to inorganic sol-gel films. Flexible films that have been functionalized and have better compatibility with various organic topcoats. Due to reduced porosity and cracking potential as well as improved mechanical properties, the incorporation of nanoparticles into hybrid sol-gel systems improves their ability to defend against corrosion.
