NDVI: Irrigation Performance Evaluation Using RS and GIS
Abstract
In this paper, the effect of irrigation has been assessed based on fluctuations in crop productivity in temporal and spatial scale from normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) obtained from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) for the years 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016. For this study, we selected the Jayakwadi reservoir command areas in Marathawada region of Maharashtra. Using GIS techniques, delineated and LULC map was generated indicating agricultural lands. And using NDVI, irrigated Kharif and Rabi crops were identified and changes in productivity were studied. Then, by comparing the results for the pre-irrigated and post-irrigated scenarios and the changes in the irrigation performances were checked. This field also helped in identifying under-irrigated areas of projects with scope for future expansion and thus, enhanced performance.
