Abstract

There are sporadic pollution issues and water supply-related problems in the Nigerian environment which calls for the urgent attention of civil engineers. This study examines strategies for eradicating water supply problems and pollution issues in the challenging economy of Nigeria. The methodology for this research work includes a site survey, case studies, visitation to some polluted sites and a literature survey. Critical strategies that are sustainable and achievable toward solving water supply and sanitation-related problems in a challenging economy were highlighted. Results show the state of water supply, sanitation practices, water demand and financial commitment from individuals and the government requires a lot of revamping and restructuring. It was concluded that water supply and sanitation practices should be given adequate priority for sustainable development and eradication of water pollution in our environment in Nigeria. The study recommends greater engagement and dedication from governmental organizations and inclusive involvement by civil society in the operation, maintenance and management of water supply and sanitation practices.
