Human Resource Management: Essential Tool for Sustainability of Infrastructures and Civil Engineering Performance in Establishments

Abstract


Construction companies, Consulting Civil and Structural engineering establishments have major roles to play within the capacity building, manpower development and sustainability of world’s infrastructures. This paper examined human resource management as essential tools for sustainability of infrastructures and engineering establishments. Methodology adopted includes review of literatures, human resource management theories and other information from engineers in selected establishments. Guiding theories in human resource management and therefore the challenges of managing people in construction were highlighted. Strategic and operational aspects of managing human resources within the development sector were checked. It has been concluded that each one aspects of recruitment, performance evaluation, training, assessment, promotion, disengagements and retirement need special attention for optimal performance of civil engineers. There is need to do further investigation on recent trends in civil engineering for Human resource management. There should be adequate remuneration and welfare packages for engineers’ altogether areas of engineering for health, safety, environment and better output from our engineering establishments in all nations of the world.
