Behavior of Concrete Masonry Blocks with Ceramic Waste
Abstract
The blooming economic growth of India has led to development of construction sector. This has helped in increasing requirement of natural resources in construction sector and also leading to generation of large quantity of waste. Utilization of construction and demolition waste has become essential considering the problems such as disposal and health hazard of mankind. This paper mainly presents on ceramic waste which is a construction and demolition waste. Ceramic waste is considered as hazardous as the biodegradation period of it is around 4000 years. The present research focuses on using ceramic waste as fine aggregate in solid concrete masonry blocks. In this research, natural sand is fully replaced by quarry dust which is commonly used in production of concrete blocks. Quarry dust is replaced by crushed ceramic waste fine aggregate by various percentages (0, 10, 20 and 30%). Concrete blocks are cast according to guidelines stipulated by Indian Standards (IS 2185-2005). Concrete blocks are subjected to compressive strength test and to repetitive cycles of alternative wetting and drying which is considered as durability test. Results show that an optimal replacement of 10% ceramic waste can effectively be used as fine aggregate when used in a controlled manner.
