Effect of Size of Crushed Ceramic Tiles as Fine Aggregates in Cement Composites
Abstract
Recent studies have shown marked upsurge of waste production where ceramic contributes to 30% waste production in ceramic industry. Research on ceramic waste as partial substitute for fine aggregate has not been fully exploited. A focused investigation is made to check whether the ceramic waste having particle size same and lesser than fine aggregates as partial substitute in cement mortar and concrete. Ceramic waste collected is crushed into required sizes as per IS383-1984. The suitability of aggregates is checked by performing some physical tests like specific gravity, sieve analysis, and fineness modulus. The investigation is carried out by comparing the compressive strengths of conventional cement mortar cubes with cubes produced from ceramic fine aggregates (CFA) for mixes 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6 and concrete M20 grade. Sand of zone 2 is mixed with same and lower zones (zone 2, 3, 4) of ceramic fines, with 10, 20, 30 and 100% replacement of natural fine aggregate (NFA) by CFA. Tests on cement mortar and concrete show a remarkable increase in compressive strength at optimal replacement of CFA. This justifies the use of ceramic waste as a replacement material for sand in cement mortars and concrete.
