A Mechanics based Analytical Model for Evaluating the Seismic Performance of Unreinforced Masonry Building Retrofitted with Wire Mesh
Abstract
A mechanics based analytical model employing the results of experimental work is proposed for the seismic performance evaluation of low-rise unreinforced masonry buildings reinforced with steel welded wire mesh. The model is based on rigid diaphragm and weak pier-strong spandrel concept, i.e. the damages occurs in piers and spandrels remain fully elastic. Two types of failure criteria’s, namely, flexural failure and shear failure were considered. Lateral force-deformation curves are defined for both flexural and shear-critical piers and capacity curve of a building is developed by superimposing the capacity curves of the piers. The proposed model was found to be in good agreement when compared with experimental results and FEMA-356 criteria.
