Abstract

To protect transmission line from faults 3-zone distance protection is widely used as it also provides backup protection. This study aims at simulating three-step protection using PSCAD software under different fault conditions in different zones. Also how relay malfunctions under presence of fault resistance. Finally, quadrilateral characteristic of relay is drawn which solves the problem of under-reach of relay due to fault resistance.

Keywords: Distance protection, fault resistance, MHO characteristics, quadrilateral characteristics, PSCAD.
