This paper is based upon the software developed using genetic algorithm and Kruskal’s algorithm for optimal location of substations and routing of feeders. The developed method is applied to the practical net work and the results obtained. Attempt has been made in this paper to find the optimal solution of distribution network and proper routing of the feeders. The programme has been developed and implemented on SAS Nagar, Mohali in Punjab by using a Matlab programme. The input insists of various load coordinates of existing and candidate substations and other parameters like iron loss, copper loss and utilization factor. The genetic algorithm is used for optimisation of function keeping in view the reliability constraints.
