Abstract

ABSTRACT

In this paper, some of the significant design parameters of L-band EDFA such as choice of optimum pump wavelength, optimum erbium-doped fiber (EDF) length, and optimum pump power have been characterized by solving implicit analytical signal gain equation using simulation as derived for C-band EDFA by F. F. Rühl. After determining optimum pump wavelength, optimum pump power and optimum EDF length, performance of L-band signal amplification has been shown for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) systems application. It has been observed that implicit analytical model of EDFA derived for C-band is also valid for L-band EDFA as 15-30 dB signal gain can be achieved in L-band wavelengths. It is also revealed that widely available 980 nm pump wavelength is equally efficient for pumping both C-and L-band EDFAs.
