Abstract

A digitally wavelength tunable optical filter system is analysed for timing performance. This digitally tunable optical filter system was recently proposed, it utilized  semiconductor optical amplifiers, wavelength selection elements, splitters, combiners and optical fibers for achieving filtering action.  This paper presents a theory for calculating transmission/delay times of different wavelengths. The delay time equations are derived for all center wavelengths of the filter. These transmission time calculations can be used for routing and/or path selection decisions of different wavelengths. A system can be analysed for any number of wavelengths by using this method. The method of analysis can be used in similar type of digitally tunable optical filter systems.
