An Efficient Energy Management System for the PV Grid Tied and Battery Backed Up Systems for the Small Load Applications

Sachin Vrajlal Rajani

Abstract

The energy management and the associated tools are gaining attention for the different applications. The concept of the Home Energy Management System (HEMS) is finding its usefulness in recent years. This paper explores the idea of HEMS with a small system comprised of a conventional grid, a PV source, and battery storage. The complementary action of the grid, solar generation, and the battery stored energy is functioning together to meet up the load demand. The paper describes the control strategy for the HEMS with the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) based grid tie inverter, battery storage and the network with a transformer. A test bench was created in MATLAB/Simulink® with the varying load pattern, and the control logic makes it possible to supply the desired load even when the grid is not available.
