High Gain High Efficiency Single Switch DC–DC Converter for Green Power Source Conversion

Sinimol Salim, Peter K. Abraham

Abstract

Efficiency of solar cell is very low and it is preferred to be operated at low voltages; so it is difficult to supply power to a certain load. Conventional boost converter offers limited gain. So a high voltage boosting is needed. Proposed converter consists of coupled inductor and switched capacitor technique to achieve high gain without high duty ratio and turns ratio. In the magnetic field of coupled inductor and intermediate capacitor, input energy is first stored and passed to next stage for load consumption. Passive clamp network reduces voltage stress and conduction losses on the switch; therefore a low voltage switch is needed. Reverse recovery problem of diode is alleviated by coupled inductor. MPPT technique is used to obtain maximum power from a varying source. This is done by varying the duty ratio of the boost converter by using MPPT algorithm. In perturb and observe algorithm, array terminal voltage or current is periodically perturbing. Operating point is moving in the increasing power direction in order to track maximum available power.
