A Survey on the Status of Cellular Manufacturing System Implementation in Indian Manufacturing Industries
Abstract
Increasing of worldwide competition and changing customer needs force producers to enhance their manufacturing activities in terms of effectiveness, flexibility and productivity with minimal incremental expenditure of time and capital. Cellular manufacturing (CM), which applies the principles of group technology to production, has been acknowledged as a promising alternative to traditional manufacturing technologies, such as job shops and flow lines, in meeting the demands of competitive industries that presently prevail worldwide. A large number of articles on the design issues of the CM system have been published. Unfortunately, the comprehensive CM study has not been implemented very well in developing nations such as India. This article provides the outcomes of a study in Indian manufacturing sectors to find out the status of CM implementation.
