A Review of Soot Particle Emission from Diesel Engines and its Control using Diesel Particulate Filter

In the automotive industry since the introduction of diesel engines have provided several advantages with respect to reliability, durability as well as efficiency. But in recent years there have been continuously growing concerns over pollutant emissions from diesel engines. This review paper is concentrated on emission of soot particles or particulate matter (PM) from diesel engines under different operating conditions. Size and composition of these particles vary depending upon engine operating conditions. In order to control PM emissions Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) are installed on the tail-pipes of diesel engines. This review paper discusses about the generic working principle of these DPFs. The entire working process of DPF is divided and presented in terms of the following processes: filtration of soot particles, pressure drop development and regeneration process to burn out accumulated soot particles.References
