Simulation of Pole Placement Controller for an Active Bus Suspension System

Designing a suspension system for a bus is an interesting and challenging control problem. When the suspension system is designed, a one quarter bus model (one of the four wheels) is used to reduce the complexity of the problem. The active suspension system is the one which has a force actuator in parallel to passive suspension. The open loop time response of the suspension system is damped oscillatory and has large settling time. In order to overcome this problem the system is operated in closed loop mode. This paper deals with design methodology of pole placement controller and the performance of which is compared with conventional proportional integral derivative (PID) controller. The objective of the proposed controller is to minimize the effect of road disturbances. A simulation is carried out using MATLAB to prove the effectiveness of the pole placement controller on the modeled active bus suspension system.
