Design of Absorption and Adsorption Cooling Systems for Truck Cabin Using Exhaust Heat

Abstract

Abstract

The present work is focused towards the review of the work done in the field of automobile air conditioning and design of proposed air-cooling system for the cabin of the truck using waste heat from the exhaust. The present cooling systems run on engine power and consume around 10% of the total power produced by the engine and thereby increase fuel consumption. From heat balance, it is observed that around 60% of the total energy supplied to the engine is going as waste, so there is a strong potential to develop a heat generated a cooling system for automobiles. The available options in heat generated cooling have been critically examined. Absorption and adsorption cooling systems have been found to be acceptable. The heat potential in the exhaust has been executed and found to be enough for powering the proposed cooling system. The cooling load required for the truck cabin is calculated as 3.5 kW. The design of the proposed absorption and adsorption cooling system for cooling capacity of 3.5 kW has been presented. The system component dimensions have been obtained and found to be suitable for the truck. The COP of absorption system is 0.7 and that of the adsorption system is 0.42.
