Water Electrolysis-based Hydrogen Generation Systems: A Review

Sankar Barman, Pran Hari Talukdar

Abstract

This work presents a review of the works on the water electrolysis-based hydrogen generation systems. The works have been presented in two sections, namely the research done at the international and national levels. As far as the analysis is considered, the focus is on the parametric analysis, which effects the performance of a hydrogen generation system developed using the concept of electrolysis of alkaline solution. The review shows that many parameters, like, separation between the electrodes, material and coating of the electrodes, type of the membrane, electrolyte concentration etc., significantly determines the amount and purity of the hydrogen generated by the water electrolysis system. For example, when a hazardous asbestos membrane is replaced by a composite material of TiO2, the produced hydrogen comes out to be 99.9% pure.
