Energy Data Collection in Nigeria: Sources, Resources, Challenges and Recommendations

Abstract
The process of having adequate, affordable, accessible and clean energy starts with the conception and design of an energy plan. The implementation of such plan needs reliable and up-to-date data. This paper proved that in Nigeria, collecting energy data had always been a challenging and this could be traceable to such problems as lack of expertise on energy data collection, the absence of legal instruments to aid data collection, the dearth of professionals where they exist, the complex and costly nature of the exercise, a very large informal sector in the country and security issues that are prevailing in the country at present. This paper also highlights that there are quite a number of sources through which energy data could be sourced in Nigeria and most of these are primarily government establishments with few private sector organisations. The paper went further to discuss the methods of energy data collection in Nigeria which include; stakeholder engagement meetings, synergy among organizations, workshops and seminars, and through collaborations among state and non-state actors in the energy sector. The paper also made recommendations to the challenges elucidated, believing that if properly implemented, will surely help in overcoming the challenges which had been the bane of energy data availability in the country over years.
