Impact of Using Liquefied Natural Gas for Transportation in the City of Cochin: A Review

Abstract
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is considered as a clean and safe fuel when compared to diesel with an estimated 12% reduction in total carbon intensity (gCO2e/MJ) and thereby its utilisation, replacing conventional fossil fuels in the transportation sector offers a promising potential for reducing environmental pollution. Even though CNG based commercial vehicles are not uncommon in several parts of India, the city of Cochin in Kerala has a distinctive advantage of having equipped with a world class facility, LNG terminal (Petronet) with an installed capacity to receive, store and gasify approximately 5 MMT per annum of LNG and is now largely underutilized. The LNG driven commercial vehicles for mass transportation in large fleets could produce significant impacts on social, environmental and economic prospects of the city. This study reviews the possible outcomes of mandating a policy to convert the existing fleet of heavy duty vehicles into LNG powered. It also reviews the current status and socio-economic impact of natural gas fuel when used for transportation.
