Evaluating the Effect of the EGR Rate on the Performance and the Emission of VCR Engine Operating on Jatropha Biodiesel Blends

Abstract
The modern diesel engines running on biodiesel employ many techniques to encounter strict exhaust emission norms. Among the many techniques suggested to mitigate the NOX emission from the compression ignition engine, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is being employed extensively. The EGR curtails the proportion of the oxygen in the mixture and lowers the flame temperature inside the cylinder. This research is intended to investigate the influence of the rate of EGR on the jatropha biodiesel, diesel and their blends. A single cylinder, four-stroke variable compression ratio engine was analyzed for performance and emission characteristics with petro diesel, the jatropha biodiesel and different blends under varying compression ratios. The rate of EGR was varied from 0 to 20% and its influence on Bth and BSFC were measured. The effect of varying EGR rate was also experimented on the emissions of NOX, HC, CO and CO2 for the various blends of jatropha biodiesel. The experimental results have undergone the analysis through ANOVA and optimized rate of EGR was found to 15%.
