Abstract

The tropical medicinal vine known as cat's claw, Uncaria tomentosa (Willd. ex Schult.) DC. (Family: Rubiaceae), is native to the Amazon rainforest and other regions of South and Central America. It has been shown to be useful as an immune system booster, antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory agent and has been historically used to treat wounds, fever, urinary tract infections, abscesses, and asthma. U. tomentosa contains a variety of phytoconstituents, including proanthocyanidins, sterols, organic acids, oxindole and indole alkaloids, glycosides, and organic acids. Theileria, Plasmodium, and Babesia parasites, as well as pathogenic bacteria and viruses, have all been tested for their biological effects on U. tomentosa. Recently, a variety of cat's claw preparations—including tinctures, decoctions, capsules, extracts, and teas—have become marke table. This paper highlights solid phase extraction technique based on cationic and anionic mode which were used to quantify chemicalconstituents in extract, applying analytical technique using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectra(LC-MS) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). There are reports of quantitative data as well as chromatogram resulted from methanolic extract of leaf, stem and root of plant which focused the alkaloids and other chemical constituents.
