Abstract

The development of high strength in Indian kaolinite has been studied in the presence of vanadium pentoxide. It is observed that the strength of Indian kaolinite is increased with addition of V2O5 by sol-gel techniques and characterized by Vickers hardness, X-ray diffraction and scanning electronmicroscopy studies. The kaolinite was compacted with different proportions of V2O5 additives and sintered at four different high temperatures. It was observed that V2O5 showed a favorable effect on theformation of properly crystallized mullite and increasing its strength. Well-crystallized mullite is formed with an average size of 350-500 nm and 70-100 nm, which leads to increased hardness. When sintered at 1600 °C for 2 hours, MPK and RHK obtained a maximum Vickers hardness of 15.04 GPa and 14.71 GPa, respectively, when doped with 2 mass% V2O5.
