Effect of Particle Size Mix Ratio of Adsorbent for AGO and PMS Adsorption: The Monitoring of Hydrocarbon Utilizing Bacteria in Water Media

Ukpaka peter

Abstract

The effect of particle size mix ratio of clay and agro-based material of Plantain Ogoni Red (POR), Banana Native (BN), Banana Ogoni Red (BOR) and Plantain Agbagba 1 was monitored in AGO and PMS adsorption process based on formulated adsorbents. The characteristics of hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria was monitored in both salt and fresh wager media upon the effect of particle size and contaminants medium. Different particle size and contaminant medium. Different particle size of 150, 600 and 1.18 mm with mix ratio of R5:5, R8:4, R1:9, R6:4, R4:6 and R2:8 was prepared as adsorbent as well as the process was of time-dependent of I hour to 5 hours. The microbial concentration was monitored alongside with the adsorption process of AGO and PMS removal from each of the reactor. The investigation revealed function of adsorption treatment process rather than bioremediation treatment process and as such low microbial activity was experienced. The remediation of the contaminated salt water medium and the fresh water medium was more of adsorption process than bioremediation. The research revealed that transient growth characteristics of the hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria properties of lag phase, acceleration phase, progressive phase, stationary phase a well as decline phase occurred. Furthermore, the activity of the microbes has impacted the AGO and PMS remediation in each system and the process is influenced by the particle size of the formulated adsorbent.
