City Gas Distribution in India: The Best Practices of Gujarat Gas Limited to Overcome CGD Challenges

Abstract

The economy of any country runs on energy. Smart use of energy can lead the county to grow faster and sustainable pace without damaging the ecology. In the contemporary era, the world is focusing on increasing use of natural source of energy in household (domestic) and industries. Natural gas contains methane, is considered as a fuel for economy and ecology. Government of India has also acknowledged the use of natural gas as fuel to grow in the economy and sustain ecology. The natural gas distribution also knows as City Gas Distribution (CGD) providing natural gas to domestic via PNG (for residential and industrial) and CNG (for transportation) network in India. This paper highlights the present challenges faced by CGD sector with reference to the regulatory, gas supply, cost optimization, health and safety, etc. The authors have discussed the best practices set up by Gujarat Gas Limited, a state-level PSU of Government of Gujarat, to overcome such challenges. These practices can be adapt by other CGD companies and gain maximum customer base and contribute to the balance between growing economy and ecology to achieve sustainable development and quality of life for people.
