Carbon dioxide injection to remove shale gas from sedimentary clayey schists

Carlos Armenta-Déu

Abstract

This paper proposes an alternative method to the fracking technique to obtain shale gas, injecting compressed carbon dioxide in the subsoil. The injection of a pressurized gas like carbon dioxide into a porous media provokes the removal of existing gas into the pores, provided the pressure of the injected gas is high enough. The design of the adequate geotechnical structure makes it possible to inject pressurized carbon dioxide and extract the removed gas from the sedimentary clayey schists. This paper studies the dual injection-removal process in the porous media and the characteristics of the geotechnical structure and technique to obtain gas from the subsoil using carbon dioxide as propelling vehicle. The paper also shows the advantages of this new technique compared to fracking.
