Settlement of Soil while Digging
Abstract
While digging of soft soil, collapse of soil takes place. When load of man is more than bearing strength
of soft soil, the soil will settle down. Hence bearing strength of mud soil is found at a particular depth
and this is compared with load coming due to man. If weight of man is more as compared to bearing
strength of wet soil, the settlement will occur. The process of excavation in soft soil poses a potential
risk of soil collapse, particularly when the load imposed by human activities exceeds the bearing
strength of the soil. This study focuses on understanding the intricate relationship between soil
settlement and excavation, specifically in the context of wet mud soil. The settlement phenomenon
occurs when the load exerted by individuals or equipment surpasses the bearing strength of the soft,
wet soil. To address this issue, the study aims to determine the bearing strength of the mud soil at
various depths, establishing a crucial baseline for comparison with the loads induced by human
activities.
