Expansive soils are problematic to Civil Engineering by increase and decrease its volume due to movement of water in and out. This kind of soils is portrayed by its outrageous hardness while drying and with high swelling process on the wetting. Several researches during the past 20 years have proposed different nano materials for the soil stabilization approaches to counter the hazards present in the soils. This paper elaborates various studies on different nano materials are nano silica, nano clay, nano composites were used to control the behavior of expansive soils on the current soil stabilization. In this paper, a state-of-art of the nano materials soil stabilization succinctly summarized. The nano materials are critically reviewed in terms of their soil stabilization with their strength and limitations. The review highlights the need for prediction of materials that are conceptually simple yet efficient for use in conventional engineering practices for different types of expansive soils for sustainable development purpose.
