Sediment Yield Analysis of Gangapur Dam using SWAT and GIS

Sediment yield in reservoir is one of the major factors that plays role in functioning of any dam storage. Sediment yield not only affects the reservoir capacity but also can affect the generation of hydropower and safety of dam as well as aquatic life. GIS (Geographic information system) based SWAT (soil and water assessment tool) are used in this study to calculate the sediment yielded in reservoir of Gangapur Dam for the period of 35 years (1982 to 2016). It is observed that sedimentation rate in Gangapur dam reservoir varies between 0.04 MCM per year to 2.79 MCM per year, with average rate of 1.29 MCM per year. It is calculated that during these 35 years there is almost 20 percent reduction in reservoir capacity and further using trend line analysis it is calculated that there will be 70 percent reduction in reservoir capacity by the year 2090.
