Mechanical and Micro-structural Properties of Friction Stir Welded Dissimilar Joints of Aluminium Alloys
Abstract
Abstract In this work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded dissimilar joints of 6101-to-6063 aluminium alloys were evaluated. Tool with round pin profile was fabricated of high speed steel material which was suitable for friction stir welding of aluminium alloys. Under monotonic tensile loading, an increase in the joint strength was observed with the increase in the tool rotational speed. The micro-hardness of friction stir zone increased with increase in tool rotational speed while the micro-hardness of friction stir zone increased as the welding speed decreased. The heat effected microstructure showed uniform and dense weld zone without any defect. It was observed that the weld material was defect free.
